Did John Aspinall really run a book on which of his Clermont members, including Lucan, would commit suicide?

Would Lord Lucan be the first?

John Aspinall was infamous for his spectacularly bad taste.

Just days after Sandra Rivett had been murdered, he stuck up a notice at the Clermont which read, 'If Lord Lucan comes in, will he please ring 999 as someone wants to interview him.'

A few months before the murder, Aspinall was also running a gambling book on which one of his members would be the first man to kill himself.

The favourite was Charles Benson, the Daily Express’ racing correspondent, who was quoted at 13-8 on. A Lucan suicide was quoted at odds of five to one.

The story of Lord Lucan can be found in William Coles' brilliantly edited
